Have a GED? Want to go to college?
If you have a General Equivalency Diploma, you can attend college if you desire.B
The American English Express will give you a good taste of what you will find in a college classroom as well as important hints and tips about how to conduct yourself in the college learning environment.
It is important for you to have some introduction to college level teaching so that you can make the most of your new learning experience. J
These days, many students enroll in college despite their poor English language skills, just like you. The colleges need you: they always need more students. Community colleges, in particular, are dedicated to providing low-cost higher education to their community (usually a county) residents.
4 So the colleges test you: they test your math, reading and writing skills. These test are called placement tests. Depending on how well you score, you are assigned to remedial classes (to bring your skills up to freshman college level; this is called remediation).
You can be assigned one, two or more of such classes. For example, a typical community college has one or two levels of remediation for reading, writing and math (and sometimes for oral communication - speaking English).
If you are assigned remedial classes, you must complete these courses before you enroll for most college-level courses. This can take you one, two or even three semesters, depending on your skills.L
The American English Express will provide you with instruction in the basics of reading, writing and speaking on the college level. Many of my students have said to me that they could have advanced faster in college if they had taken my course first. C
The following chart illustrates the potential savings for a typical freshman college student in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and is typical of schools all around the country:

The dollar savings potential is based on the cost of tuition, books and fees at the colleges indicated. In each case, only the most basic reading course and writing course has been included in the calculation.
The time estimate is based on a student saving one semester of basic skills courses. Some students may be able to skip over more than one level of remedial (basic) coursework and would save more money and time.
A That is how the American English Express can help you save time and money: by improving your skill level with a comprehensive review BEFORE taking the college placement tests.
